Pool in a Phoenix backyard being refilled with a garden hose after resurfacing: shallow clear water across a fresh white plaster floor, the hose draped over the coping, palm shadows on the deck

Phoenix Acid Wash & Start-Up

Acid Wash & Pool Start-Up in Phoenix, AZ

A brighter surface for stained plaster, and a careful start-up after a new finish.

Acid Washing and Start-Up for Phoenix Pools

An acid wash strips a thin layer off the plaster surface to remove stains and algae marks. It can buy a few more years when the plaster is still smooth and tight but has turned dingy.

It isn't a fix for rough, etched or hollow plaster, and each wash takes some of the surface with it. We'll tell you honestly if your pool is a candidate or if it's time to resurface.

Start-up is the other half of this service. The first weeks after a new finish decide how it looks for years, so we fill without stopping, brush the surface often and keep the water balanced while it cures.

Draining for an Acid Wash

The City of Phoenix tells homeowners to drain pool water into the sanitary sewer cleanout. It says not to drain into the street, onto neighboring yards or into nearby washes. Every drain-down we run goes to the cleanout.

The City recommends sending no more than 12 gallons per minute into the cleanout, and less if the line is small or in poor shape. We watch the shower and tub drains while the pool empties and shut the pump off if anything backs up.

Acid Wash & Pool Start-Up Questions

How often can a pool be acid washed?

Not often. Each wash removes some plaster, so we recommend it sparingly and only on finishes with enough thickness left.

Does an acid wash need the pool drained?

Yes. The surface has to be dry and exposed. We drain to your sewer cleanout, as the City of Phoenix directs.

Why brush a new pool every day?

New finishes release fine dust as they cure. Brushing keeps it from settling and helps the surface come out even.

Can I swim right after start-up?

Usually within a few days once the water is balanced. We'll tell you when it's ready.
